Aboriginal child health programs

Description: Working in partnership with the NSW Health Education Centre Against Violence ECAV to develop staff capacity in trauma-informed care for Aboriginal families through a series of training workshops and provision of funding to facilitate staff attendance.

Deadly Dads is a resource based program that uses everyday parenting items such as baby blankets, towels and nappies that are designed to bring Aboriginal men into the breastfeeding conversation. The program is implemented using a workshop format. Participants include Aboriginal Health Workers and community members.

Stage 2 of the pilot will be facilitated in Description: The development of a blended learning package to build capacity among staff working with Aboriginal women and families in providing culturally appropriate smoking cessation advice.

The project aims to inform Aboriginal young people, families planning or expecting a baby, and support health professionals to discuss alcohol with pregnant Aboriginal women. Print materials, including posters, postcards, and a story book are available on the Your Room website. You can view all the videos. See the Our Health Our Way page for more information. If you need help or would like to learn more about the program, or you would like to inquire or access our services, please contact the ACYMH Wellness Coordinator.

Referrals can also come from community staff, self-referrals, and family member referrals. The Youth Wellness Coordinator YWC was created in and is funded by the First Nation Health Authority Joint Project Board aimed at service provision for vulnerable Aboriginal youth and their families who are experiencing difficulties maintaining health and wellness and navigating through the health, mental health and wellness service agencies and organizations.

The program provides services to youth with more complex needs between the ages of and their families from across the Syilx Okanagan Nation. The services include prevention, promotion, community linkages, support and brief counseling outreach services.
