Did you download any software recently? If not, have you tried loading in safe mode? If so, does that make a difference. Make sure you run any disk utility, defrag, cleanup, etc.

I would start there. I think it's the firewire external HDD that's been causing the login problems. It wasn't there in safe mode and safe mode with networking crashed same as normal mode. I'd had problems with this drive b4 but it was well over a year ago, now it's fallen over completely - can't get the drive to show, but no problems logging on!

I finally got it up, remapped to a different drive letter, but when i tried to delete a file i got a blue screen "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage.. I use it on a mac at work via firewire too with no problems i'll see if i can read and back it up on monday , but on the pc it's gonzo.

I used device manager to uninstall it it was disabled but i can't find a driver for it, just hex firmware upgrades do i need one of these, and if so how do i use it? I suspect there may have been a conflict with another port, but am not sure - if there was, how would i find out and fix? You pc will boot normally when the firewire HDD is not connected? Also, your original post says that you have 2 external drives, one usb and one firewire but you mention above that the firewire one is a combo device.

Are you experiencing problems when you boot with both external HDDs connected via usb? If your problem only occurs with the firewire HDD connected usb or otherwise , it appears that you have a driver issue but most likely the HDD itself is having failure.
